Embark on a journey into the enchanting world of Ikebana flower arrangement, a centuries-old Japanese art form that diverges distinctly from Western floral design.

The Discovery of Ikebana

Recently, a thoughtful family friend gave us an Ikebana set. Intrigued and unfamiliar with this practice, I found myself in possession of pots and spike holders, initiating a quest to understand the essence of Ikebana. Unveiling an artistry both elegant and intricate, Ikebana transforms the act of displaying flowers into a harmonious symphony of beauty and intention.

Join me as we explore the profound impact Ikebana can have on changing your environment, infusing it with grace and mindful aesthetics.

How to make an ikebana flower arrangement?

Simplicity is key. Ikebana emphasizes simplicity, balance, and the use of empty space, embodying a deeper connection to nature and the mindful appreciation of beauty. Therefore, you don’t need much material. Unlike the western flower arrangement, you don’t have to fill it up with lots of flowers or greenery.

Simply a couple flowers, stems, or branches are necessary. As the moribana, a dish or low vase is ideal. To keep your flowers upright, you will need a kenzan, the ikebana flower spikes. It is usually a bit heavy and made with multiple needles.

Place each elements by following the seven principles of ikebana: silence, minimalism, shape, form, humanity, aesthetics and structure. It is typical for ikebana flower arrangements to be asymmetrical and also show imperfections with its empty spaces, but altogether balanced and present a mindful work of art.
